How much do the courses cost?
The registration fee for the Rider Courses is $309 for the Basic Rider Course and $109 for the Experienced Rider Course.
Can I just take the course as a walk-in? Do I have to register ahead of time?
Courses require registration by noon on the Wednesday before the first session begins.
Can I register and pay for my Motorcycle Class on-line?
You can register on-line by pointing your browser to https://webadvisor.fdtc.edu (note the “S” in https – this indicates a secure website for your security). Then click on the Continuing Education button on the right side of the screen. When the WebAdvisor Continuing Education Menu page is displayed, on the right side, click on the Register and Pay for Continuing Education Classes link. On the next page, enter the search term MOTORCYCLE in the Search for (Key Word) box and click the Submit button.
A new page shows a list of scheduled courses for the current academic term. To register and pay for a course, begin by clicking the box in the first column beside the course and date you want to register for and click the Submit button.
Please fill in the Personal Identification form. Be complete. It is OK to skip the SS# field. Please be sure to enter your date of birth, however, or SCDMV cannot process your test results for the license waiver. Also, be sure to check the statement at the bottom of the page, then click the Submit button. We appreciate your answering the Additional Registration Info form , but it is completely optional. Click the Submit button to proceed.
The Pay for Classes page is displayed. Pull down the options to the Choose one of the Following and select the Register Now (Check Out) option. In the Payment type box, select your card type – VISA, MasterCard or Discover. Click the Submit button. Verify the information on the next page and click the Continue button. Fill in your card number, expiration date and CSC numbers, take a moment to verify their accuracy, and click the Pay Now button to process the payment.
How do I request a refund?
There are no refunds of course registration fees after the enrollment period is closed, which is noon on the Wednesday before the first session begins.
Am I eligible to take the class?
The one and only prerequisite for the Basic Rider Course is the ability and stamina to ride a bicycle. The Experienced Rider Course requires the student to provide their own motorcycle.
Do I need to wear protective clothing?
Student Riders are responsible for their own personal protective equipment. Each student must have and wear the following items whenever seated on a motorcycle:
DOT compliant helmet, 3/4 open-face type, full-face type or modular. No half-helmets, or “shorty” style or novelty helmets are acceptable.
Eye protection. Face shields, glasses or goggles. A windscreen is NOT acceptable eye protection
Full-fingered gloves, preferably leather.
Long sleeve shirt or jacket
Long pants
Over the ankle footwear.
Do I get a motorcycle license when I'm done with class?
Upon successful completion of the BRC course, which requires participation and meeting the objectives in all classroom and range sessions, meeting the standard of 80% or higher on the written knowledge test and accumulating not more than 15 total points in the MSF skills evaluation, students will be given a special envelope that may be presented to SC DMV for a Motorcycle license. SC DMV reserves the right to randomly conduct a retest of a student.
How long are the classes?
The course is 3-4 hours for the online eCourse, plus 15 hours of instruction, approximately 5 in the classroom and 10 on the range. The typical schedule is:
eCourse at the student’s convenience prior to the first meeting. Students MUST print the eCourse Completion Certificate and bring it to the first class.
Saturday 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. (one hour for lunch)
Sunday 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. (one hour for lunch)
What if it rains?
The course runs, rain or shine. Range activity will stop for strong winds, lightning or other events as determined by the RiderCoach.
Do I have to bring my own helmet for the course.
If you do not have a DOT helmet of your own, loaner helmets are available for student use. All other personal protective equipment must be provided by the participant.
